Lucy Shinn's letter to her daughter, Milicent, about Thanksgiving, Charlie's school.
Dear Millie, Nov. 1877 I am afraid you will not get a very long letter this week. Thanksgiving is coming and there are so many little things to be done before then that I hardly know which way to turn. I would say that I don't doubt we can find a place to put Seddie even if the folks do all come from the City. We should be very happy to have her come. I don't know whether Charlie will be home or not. He says his school closes on the 20th. He has had the offer of one or two schools but has not decided. I wish he could find a good school down this way. I am glad your visit to Cousin Lue went off so pleasantly. I had no fears about it. On the whole I think it just as well that Mrs. Sill did not go, as Cousin Lue would not have become so much acquainted with Mr. Sill had she been there. Cousin Lue writes that she enjoyed the visit very much and that she liked Mr. S. extremely. I feel good over that 'fait accompli'. Aunt Jennie declines my invitation to come up and take Thanksgiving dinner with us, as she has invited Mattie Noble to come down with her family. I had seen in the paper the death of Miss Trent's [?] sister and we felt sure it must be her sister. I am sorry for the poor child. It is hard indeed for one so young to have so much to bear. Of course she is not at the club house and this will increase your expenses, will it not? If all from the City should come, Charlie can sleep on lounge in Papa's Office, Joe on sofa in dining room, leaving two bedrooms for you, Annie and Seddie. [transcribed by Kathryn Kasch]
